'Big Smiles'

OUR AIM

The aim of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is to provide people with a disability, the opportunity to ride and enjoy all the activities connected with horse riding. Riding for people with a disability is both therapeutic and recreational and RDA is in fact one of the few organisations who offer a multi-diagnostic service, catering for a wide range of disabilities.

OUR OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide disabled people with the means to ride at the level of their ability, choice and ambition.
  2. To acquire, manage and support the resources; people, ponies, facilities and finance to acheive the objectives.
  3. To make available suitable training.

I Saw A Child

I saw a child who couldn't walk,
sit on a horse, laugh and talk.
Then ride it through a field of daisies
and yet he could not walk unaided.

I saw a child, no legs below,
sit on a horse, and make it go
through woods of green
and places he had never been
to sit and stare, except from a chair.

I saw a child who could only crawl,
mount a horse and sit up tall.
Put it through degrees of paces
and laugh at the wonder in our faces.

I saw a child born into strife,
take up and hold the reins of life
and that same child was heard to say,
"Thank God for showing me the way ....."

BENEFITS TO THE RIDER

Picture of people with Dan

Horse riding is a unique form of exercise and rehabilitation. The complex movement of the horse helps to improve co-ordination, balance, muscular development and fitness. Horse riding and horse related activities assist greatly and often dramatically in the development of personal confidence, self esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust. For those with challenging behaviour, horses offer a powerful medium for restoring a sense of personal control, which significantly improves behaviour towards family, teachers and friends.

Ravelrig Group is member of the Riding for the Disabled Association, for more information on this, go to their website.
